Cartmel Priory (Cartmel)

United Kingdom / England / Arnside / Cartmel
church, place with historical importance, parish

Originally a 12th Century Augustinian monastic foundation, Cartmel Priory remains a place of worship.

At the dissolution of the monasteries, in Henry VIII's property and wealth grab of the early 16th Century, a number of monks from Cartmel Priory were hanged.

The priory church was used after the dissolution for worship, but also served as a prison and a school, as well as stabling for horses by roundhead troops in the civil war: quite a common occurrance.

Cartmel Priory is noted for its carved misericord seats and its unusually orientated tower.
