Whatton is a category C prison which holds adult male sex offenders. It opened as a detention centre and since May 1990 it has held sex offenders who participate in the Sex Offenders Treatment Programme.

Accommodation: Three main wings A, B and C mainly single cells.

Operational capacity: 761 as of 24th October 2006

Reception criteria: All applicants for a place at Whatton must (1) be Cat C; (2) have at least 6 months left to serve; (3) not require the services of a full-time MO.

Regime: The regime includes a wide range of learning and skills activities, including education, vocational training, industrial workshops and manufacturing, farms and gardens. There are also a range of offending behaviour programmes including sex offender treatment programme, enhanced thinking skills and anger management. The prison runs a Listener Scheme for those prisoners who are considered to be at risk from suicide or self harm.
