Previously an RAF base, Morton Hall was re-opened as an open prison in 1985. New accommodation was opened in 1996 and the prison was re-rolled to a Semi-Open Women's Prison and refitted in 2001 to provide dedicated facilities for women offenders.
Two ready to use units opened in 2002 increasing the capacity of the prison. Following the ending of the Intermittent Custody Sentence, the Seacole Unit is now used as a 39 bed resettlement unit which is in prison grounds just outside the main prison.
The prison is now developing as a specialist foreign national centre (with around 50 nationalities represented) and is also developing its own resettlement regime for prisoners who will be released into this country.
Governor: Susan Howard
Accommodation: All women have single rooms and in three of the units women have their own pass key.
Operational capacity: 392 as of 23rd October 2006
Reception criteria: Normal reception arrangements: Morton Hall is a semi-open female prison.
