Garth is a category B training prison which was opened in October 1988.

A new residential unit (housing 120) opened on 2 July 1997, and a further 180 places are to be provided from 2007.

Reception criteria: Garth accepts category B prisoners who are serving sentences of four years or more. We will accept prisoners in the second stage of their life sentence and can accommodate up to 100 lifers.
