County seat of Pickens County. Named after Andrew Pickens, an American militia leader during the Revolutionary War and later South Carolina Congressman. The town developed after the county courthouse was moved to its current location from Pickens Court House (or Old Pickens), on the Keowee River, in 1868, when the Pickens District was divided into the current Oconee and Pickens Counties.
The town of Pickens was established as a city in 1998. Population was 3,126 at the 2010 census. Natives include athlete Harold Alexander.
