town, tourist attraction
Travelling to Raichak on the bank of river Hoogly near Daimond Harbour and about 50 kms. from Kolkata by road, is not a very pleasurable experience as the3 road being rather congested and tough to negotiate. But once you reach Raichak, all is forgotten. The river bqank has a jetty from where you can board a boat to reach the industrial township of Haldia on the western bank of the river. But the biggest attraction is the Radisson Fotr which is now converted into a luxury hotel resort, far from the madding crowd of Kolkata.
The fost, built by the British in 1783 to ward off pirates stalling the river en route to Kolkata, General Watson, a British Commandant resided there with his family and 65 soldiers. After the Independence of India, the fort lay in ruins, till the late 90's when it was restructured as a hotel complex.
