This area was previously owned by a company that used this area to store gravel. Although it now contains buildings and no gravel, the area is still called the gravel pit because until 2007 it was the last large chunk of undeveloped land within Sandy, Utah. A controversy ensued with opposing sides battling whether to turn this area into a park or commercial development.

The commercial idea won. A Lowe's home improvement store, a Super Wal-Mart, and condominiums have been built here, with buildings for smaller "strip-mall" establishments underway.
