Named in honour of Thorbergur Thorvaldson. Thorbergur Thorvaldson M.Sc., PhD. (August 24, 1883 – October 4, 1965) of Icelandic origins was the head of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Saskatchewan (1919). Dr. Thorbergur Thorvaldson, professor of chemistry and his team at the National Research Council developed a sulphate-resistant cement which saved many well engineered structures from decay and deterioration.
