Chinese laborers arrived in Salinas with the railroad in the 1860s. This neighborhood was established in 1893 after the first Chinatown in the area burned down. Despite the name, Japanese, Filipino, and Mexican workers also settled in the area. The neighborhood today has numerous abandoned buildings and homeless encampments.
