The South Carolina State House is the building housing the government of the U.S. state of South Carolina. The building houses the South Carolina General Assembly and the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina. Until 1971, it also housed the Supreme Court. It is located in the capital city of Columbia near the corner of Gervais and Assembly Streets.

The South Carolina State Capitol building was begun before the Civil War, shelled by Sherman's forces to "get the range" of the city and finally finished in 1907. The damage from the cannonballs has not been repaired, and is helpfully marked with bronze stars. It is on the National Register of Historical Places. Statue of George Washington on capitol steps.

Comments

  • Columbia was also the first planned Capital City in America!
  • The interior is crusted with history and historic artifacts, and is worth the price of admission--it's free. Seriously though, if you have a spare hour, it is totally worth a tour.
