Standing above the village on Easby Moor sits the Cook Monument, visible for many miles around. Standing 51 ft high, it is constructed of local sandstone and was erected in 1827 by Robert Campion of Whitby. An extract from the plaque on the monument reads:- "A man in nautical knowledge inferior to none, in zeal, prudence and energy superior to most, regardless of danger he opened an intercourse with the friendly isles and other parts of the southern hemisphere." - a fitting tribute to the life and achievements of Captain James Cook, Great Ayton's most famous son. The obelisk was restored by public subscription in 1895.
