From 1961 through 1963 the Westford antenna was an X-band radar site operating in the frequency range of 7750-8350 MHz. With its twin site at Camp Parks in California , they supported project WESTFORD . This project used very small copper dipole antennae which were dispersed into space to form a belt around the earth. The Earth-based radar site could then bounce communication signals off of the dipole belt back to each other. In 1962 the Westford antenna was used in conjunction with Camp Parks to successfully transmit a television picture by bouncing the signal off of the ECHO-I satellite.
