  • The age old east/west snobbery divide of Britain's towns and cities makes no exception for the somewhat dilapidated town of Winsford. Residents of Wharton are viewed with disdain by their counterparts west of the River Weaver. Much of modern-day Wharton was hurriedly built on the sites of medieval plague pits to accommodate the plethora of refugees from the famine stricken tenements of Liverpool. Even today, two generations later 'scousus-plasticus' can be readily spotted, recognizable by his pallid complexion and crooked legs caused by the onset of rickets.
