Instead of hitting the malls, take a diversion and head for the hills (or the Albany Scenic Reserve gully, rather).

Subtly signposted from Lonely Track Road (best place to park your car would be around the Lonely Track/Gills Road intersection) follow the ∆ markings and make your way up and down some glorious bush with tuis around every corner, it seems.

It roughly takes 1.5 hours and well worth it. Albany Scenic Reserve is not flat by any means, but the track is a moderate walk all the same. If you travel one way you’ll end up at the Wright Road exit, so your options then are to hightail it back through the bush, or walk along the roadside back to your car.

By the way, the kauri you are looking for is 1.8m in diameter and 600-800 years old. Leave your designer shoes at home, and bring a water bottle. Be sure to check the Auckland Weather forecast.

We Say | The paths within the Albany Reserve were undergoing maintenance when we visited, so while some are nicely shingled – the others need some steady foot manevouring. Don’t let this put you off. If a 5 year old can do it, so can you
