Auckland Harbour Bridge, built in 1959 and expanded in 1969, nearly killed the ferry service that used to be the main means of transport between Auckland City and the North Shore. Despite its expansion in 1969, it has proved inadequate for traffic congestion, and there is talk of building a second bridge or perhaps a tunnel.
