S22 HMS Resolution : first Resolution Class SSBN
carrying x16 Polaris/Chevaline SLBMs
Hull and Machinery built Vickers Ltd, Engineering Group, Barrow-in-Furness
Turbines built by English Electric Co Ltd and Rolls Royce and Associates Ltd
Ordered May 1963;
Laid down 26 February 1964;
Launched 15 September 1966;
In service October 1967;
Commissioned 2 October 1967;
De-commissioned 22 October 1994;
Est. building cost £40,240,000
This Class was designed to carry 16 Polaris SLBM missiles similar to those used in the contemporary American force, but retro-fitted with the British Chevaline warhead variant. The Resolutions bear a close resemblance to the 'Lafayette' class of the USN. The building time for these boats was about twice the length of time it would have taken to build in America. To get the most out of the boats each boat has two complete crews working alternate patrols. The role of SSBN'S is to remain undetected by being able to run very quietly.
