This site, at 878-882 Bergen Street, formerly contained Congregation Beth Hamedrish Hagadol, the Bergen Street Shul. It was an Orthodox synagogue founded by Rabbi Jacob B. Mendelson, the chief rabbi of Newark. It was removed via eminent domain to make way for Route 78. The remnants of this and four other Newark synagogues similarly lost were pooled to create Congregation Israel, an Orthodox synagogue in Springfield, NJ.
