In 1942, two acquisition authorizations allowed the War Department to acquire fee title to 470 acres of land, the total land acquired for the site. Also, two glide angle clearance permits were acquired for the removal or trimming of trees; however, no additional acreage was involved.

The Campbell Auxiliary Field No. 4 was located 12 miles northwest of Chico, in Tehama County, California. Prior to acquisition by the War Department, the site was used for livestock grazing. The site was also referred to be the following names:

* Satellite Landing Field A 4, Chico Air Base
* Chico Auxiliary Landing Field A 4
* Chico Army Air Base, Auxiliary Field A 4
* Auxiliary Landing Field, A 4.

It was established as an auxiliary field to the Chico Army Air Field. Improvements to the site include a latrine, wooden truck and crew shelter, a fence, and a dust palliative surface treatment landing mat.

Accountability of the total 470 acres was assumed by the Federal Farm Management Corporation on July 12, 1946.
