Proposed Rail Ferry site between the North and South Island. This will reduce ferry sailing time by 30 minutes, reduce the travelling time to Christchurch by up to 1.5 hours and reduce the environmental impact of the ferries on the Marlborough Sounds. It will also allow greater amounts of rail freight to be carried more efficiently between Christchurch and Wellington because the steep gradient out of Picton will no longer be a factor.
