The Otira Rail Tunnel at 8.5 kilometers, it is the third longest rail tunnel in New Zealand. When it was completed in August 1923, it was the longest tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere, and the seventh longest tunnel in the world. Eastbound unit coal trains require a minimum of 5 DX class locomotives to ascend the steep 1 in 33 gradient.
