"Vernon Court" (Newport, Rhode Island)

USA / Rhode Island / Newport / Newport, Rhode Island
 residence, country house

The original mansion was built for Nathan Mathews by Peabody & Stearns in 1871. According to Newport maps, it was later owned by James Robert Keene and appears to have demolished with a large new structure built to the rear north(east side) of the lot. By 1893, the property was owned by the Alfred Smith Estate.

It was replaced by Vernon Court, an adaptation of a 17th century French Chateau, designed and built in 1898 by Carrére & Hastings for Anna (Mrs. Richard van Nest) Gambrill of Peapack, New Jersey. Occupying one full block on historic Bellevue Avenue, "Vernon Court" was widely heralded as the most spectacular mansion of its kind in America.

  • Nathan Mathews Jr. was a Mayor of Boston. However. He was born in 1854. Age 17 when Vernon Court was constructed. So his father must have commissioned the cottage. Can't seem to find any record of him. Anyone know where I can find records of Nathan Mathews (Sr.)
