Pilgrims of Saint Jacques de Compostela through Gascony and of the High Middle Ages towards the Pyrenees. Maylis Sanctuary, situated on a peak between Saint-Sever and Orthez in Chalosse, attracted a large crowd of faithful. It remains today a place of pilgrimage dedicated to the Marian cult.

The original monastery was built in the apse of the church to diocesan priests came educate faith and morality to the public. It was in 1946 that Olivetan Benedictine monks settled in the monastery. Simple priory, Maylis became an abbey in 1948.

Today, the monks are in charge of the Marian shrine of Our Lady of Maylis, the reception of pilgrims and live by the manufacture and sale of herbal teas and waxes for the former.
