The oldest settlement on the island former center of government. Originally the old European inhabitant of the island lived here. The Dutch West India Company prevented Dutch colonist from settling on the island as they had trouble on other island with those settlers encroaching on their claims.

The island's Commander lived here with a few assistants and the area was known as Commander's Bay. The commander moved North to Ponton in 1790 and by 1840 the town became known as Sabaneta (Small Meadow).

By the 1850's the region gained inportance with the cultivation of cochineal, a small insect that lives on the nopal cactus. The body of the female insect is dried and ground up to produce carmine dye.
