This is a small border town. Here actually google has wrongly shown the international border. This town is very much a part of Bhutan. It is a lovely place. The most famous landmark of Samdrup Jongkhar is the Primary School, The Gompa, The Old Movie Hall (Bhutan Talkies), the general hospital and the Dzong.

Most of the business establishments were in the hands of Indian traders till late 1990s. But now local Bhutanese businessmen are catching up. Still, this town is very dependent on neighbouring Assam (Guwahati) for almost all economic activities. The militancy problems in the border areas have lately spoiled the great social and economic life this town used to have :(

  • There is a very comfortable hotel here. It is the Shambala Hotel earlier known as Madras Hotel. It is owned by a young man S. Kumar from Kerala, who has made this part of the world his home. The Shambala has comfortable but tiny rooms, good food and a great entertainer of folklore in S. kumar.
