Discovered in the 1960's, Akrotiri is a bronze-age Pompeii, a town buried by a volcanic eruption in 1628 BCE. Preserved under ash for over 3000 years is a remarkably well-built settlement with 2-3 story buildings, indoor plumbing and sewers under the street. Most remarkable are the beautiful frescoes left on the walls, leading many to speculate whether the advanced and artistic Minoan culture that built this town may have been the model for the myth of Atlantis, and the devastating volcanic eruption the basis for its eventual fall.
