Plaza Vieja

Cuba / Ciudad de la Habana / Havanna /
square, listed building / architectural heritage

First used as a square in 1559 and was originally called Plaza Nueva (New Square). It was once the site of public executions and bullfights. Now known as Plaza Vieja (Old Square).
The fountain is relatively new as the original marble fountain was demolished in the 1930's when then-president, Gerardo Machado, had an underground parking lot built within the suare. This stood until 1995 when the restoration began.
