Wisma Jana Karya is the central office of Bina Swadaya Foundation. Bina Swadaya (Self-Reliance Development Foundation) formation can be traced back from IPP (Ikatan Petani Pancasila or Pancasila Peasants Association) which was founded in 1958 to struggle for peasant rights. IPP, which had more than a million members throughout Indonesia, used three approaches to achieve the goals: mass organization approach, project approach and people's participation approach. In 1967, IPP established YSTM (Yayasan Sosial Tani Membangun or Peasant Socio Economic Development Foundation), as the legal body which carried out publishing activities Trubus agricultural magazine and certain development projects.
In 1973, there was an instruction from government that mass organizations must be amalgamated into one organization which had the same activities or concern. Then, IPP was integrated into HKTI (Himpunan Kerukunan Tani Indonesia or The Indonesian Farmers Association), especially in mass organization approach (advocacy). While other IPP activities such as: particular projects and people's participation development were carried out by LPUB (Lembaga Pembinaan Usaha Bersama or Centre for Pre Cooperative) later changed to Bina Swadaya.
