A historical Ao village located in Changkikong range in Mokokchung district of Nagaland. This village is believed to have formed around 1303 AD. It was also named 'Dekahaimong' by the Ahom king of yore and was called ‘Mepetsuyim’ (‘Misty village’ as a sign of prosperity) by other Ao villages of olden times.
This village is a testimony to many utmost historical events -
1. The first Church of Nagaland was founded here on December 22, 1872, following the baptism of 15 converts on Rev. Dr. Edward Winter Clark. (Reference: Rev. S. W. Rivenburg, 'Historical Sketch of the Ao Naga Mission'. 1887, Calcutta. p. 81). 1. ‘Gospel Path’ and 'Gospel Path Monument' (Sibsagar, Assam, to Molungkimong) through which Dr. E. W. Clark escorted by sixty Molungkimong warriors set out from Sibsagar and reached Molungkimong on 18th Dec., 1872.
2. 'First Village Gate in Naga Soil' which welcomed the Gospel Bearer, Dr. E. W. Clark escorted by sixty warriors.
3. ‘First Baptistery’ in Naga Soil, in which Dr. E. W Clark baptized the fifteen converts of Molungkimong on 22nd December, 1872
4. ‘Monument’ Commemorating First Chapel in Naga Soil, wherein Dr. E. W. Clark ministered the first Lord’s Super in Naga soil on 22nd December, 1872
5. ‘Dr. Clark Monument’ constructed at plot where he stayed whilst at Molungkimong.
This village also has the following historical spots from ancient times -
1. Yinsuba River - In the days of yore, Molungkimong people would extract iron ore from the river bed and were smelted to forge machete, spear and other implements.
2. 'Ajenjangyong River' - this river is coldest and purest in Molungkimong. In the days of yore, the water of this river was believed to have healing powers.'
3. 'Angotsukong Tenem' - This hillock is located in the Ao-Ahom trade Route (Rongsensu Lenmang). Ao traders of yore would take rest in the large stone seats atop this hillock on their return journey to the village from Sibsagar - Assam. In 1872, when Rev. Dr. Clark escorted by 60 Warriors reached this hillock, a smoke signal was sent out to the Molungkimong villagers, who were eagerly awaiting their arrival.
4. 'Kerajongyong' - During the World War II, a US cargo plane crashed into this river in 1944. The propeller - remnant - of the crash is preserved in the Students' museum of Molungkimong.
5. 'Majilong' - A couple (Male and female) of huge boulders in the boundary of Molungkimong and Molungyimsen.
6. 'Akchilong' - A huge boulder believed to be inhibited by a strong spirit. This spirit (stone) is believed to have protected Molungkimong village from adversaries of enemy attack many times in the times of yore. To this end, the Molungkimong villagers in the olden times offered pigs to the spirit of this stone.
7. 'Rongsensu Lenmang': One of the oldest Ao-Ahom trade routes was 'Rongsensu Lenmang', also called Chubakatiba Lenmang' . 'Rongsen' meaning 'wealth' and 'su'; meanig 'flow'; 'Chuba' meaning 'King' (Ahom King); 'katiba' meaning 'Trade' and 'Lenmang' meaning 'route'/'path'. This route connected nine Ao villages of yore with Sibsagar. The route ran through Molungkimong. Ao traders of yore would rest/sleep (layover) at Molungkimong on their onward and return journey.
