This hilltop, opposite the northern walls of the Old City, is regarded by some to be the place of Jesus' crucifixion ("This is the place that is called The Skull" -- Luke 23:33). Since probably the 12th century it has been a Muslim cemetery, Es-Sahira; it is situated adjacent to a related site, The Garden Tomb.

The name "Gordon's Calvary" refers to the British General Charles Gordon who, on furlough from the military in 1883, spent time in Jerusalem and became convinced that this spot was the Calvary (Golgotha) of the New Testament

  • Yet I have heard that Calvary & Golgotha are supposed to be located within the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, one km or so off to the SW. Can anyone clarify this?
