Admiral Lazarev (Адмирал Лазарев) is the second Kirov class battlecruiser. In fact, she is not a battlecruiser, but a heavy missile cruiser. However, her size has given her the unofficial designation of a battlecruiser in the mass media of many countries. Until 1992 she was named Frunze (Фрунзе) after Bolshevik leader Mikhail Frunze; at that time she was renamed after Russian admiral Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev. She was laid down on July 27, 1978 at Baltiysky Naval Shipyard, Leningrad, launched on May 26, 1981, and commissioned on October 31, 1984. In December 1984 she joined the Soviet Navy's Pacific Fleet. The following summer she visited Luanda, Aden, and Vietnam.
Until 1988, the commander of the ship was Captain Eugene G. Zdesenko. Highly respected as a military leadership and command personnel. At the time of transfer Zdesenko EG and his descent from the ship contrary to the prohibition of the new command have been brought into effect all the existing audio devices, as well as most of the mechanical rotary antennas. The newly appointed commander of the ship MV Shcherbakov.
In 1996 the Lazarev was awaiting decommissioning but this was altered to a state of prolonged preservation, and so she was laid up in the Abrek Bay, Fokino. As of July 1999 she was again getting ready for disposal due to lack of funds for repairs. As of June 2000 to raise funds (several tens of millions of rubles) while the required sum was from 2 to 7 billion to repair the cruiser at the regional shipyards. 6 December 2002 whilst still laid up there was a fire in one of the uninhabited forecastles . Four hours later the fire was located and extinguished, however, extensive damage was done.
According to Novosti last year all three of the currently 'moth-balled' Kirov Class Nuclear Battle-Cruisers Admirals Nahkimov, Ushakov & Lazarev are to be re-fiited and brought back into service by 2020. The prospects for this being possible with the Lazarev, however, given her fire damage and complicated history of reactor integrity problems this seems remote at best.
