Nuremberg's most important museum. It was founded in 1852. It has the task to show the visitor German history, art and literature.

It is the biggest cultural-historic museum in Germany with 1,2 million objects on display from a wide array of ages (prehistoric to modern).

To the most important objects count
the Etzelsdorfer Goldkegel (a golden Celtic relic) and the first globe of the world by Martin Behaim.

Among many other treasures the museum also houses some of the most important artifacts on the history of horology, i.e. the art and science of timekeeping, including the Nuernberger Ei (the oldest known [pocket]watch, invented by local watchmaker Peter Henlein, as well as the oldest surviving spring driven clock, the 'Burgunderuhr'.
