The Eastern Air Defense Sector (EADS) is one of two Sectors responsible to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the Continental NORAD Region for providing continuous strategic air defense coverage of North American air sovereignty areas. Staffed by members of the New York Air National Guard, the EADS Command Center monitors all air traffic moving in its area of responsibility which spans from the Mississippi River east to the Atlantic Ocean, and from the Canadian border south to the Gulf of Mexico.

Reporting directly to the First Air Force at Tyndall AFB, Florida, the Sector also reports to Air Combat Command and to NORAD headquarters and provides direct control to 178 sensors, 8 fighter alert locations, AWACS aircraft, a Battle Control Center (BCC), and joint air defense artillery assets to defend roughly one million square miles of airspace and 16 major cities located therein.

  • My father was stationed here from 1968-1971. Thing I remember most is the constant taking off and landings of the B-52s.
