At 63 km, the Biafo Glacier is the third longest in the world outside of the polar regions, behind the 70 km Siachen Glacier further east in the Karakoram and the 77 km Fedchenko Glacier in Tajikistan. Fifty-one km of the Biafo Glacier connects via the Hispar La (Pass) to the 49 km Hispar Glacier to form the longest glacial traverse in the world outside of the polar regions. This highway of ice connects the ancient mountain kingdoms of Nagir and Hunza in the west with Baltistan in the southeast.
