From the end of WWII, known as USAF's Tachikawa Air base, and until the advent of jet travel, was the main US Forces entry/exit port in Japan. Returned to Japanes control when it outlived its usefulness because the runway could not be extended to accommodate large jet aircraft. Also the home of the main USAF Hospital in the Tokyo area. Western half of the facility was razed and designated Showa Peace Park, most of the eastern half became the home of JGSDF's Eastern Helicopter Region.
