power plant, hydroelectric power station/plant
Construction of the Tekapo A power station commenced in 1938, and was due to be
finished in 1943, but work stopped in 1942 as manpower and materials concentrated on
the war effort. Building was resumed in 1944 and large camps housing over 500 people
were established. The station was finally commissioned in 1951. It was the second station to be built as part of the Waitaki hydro scheme.
