Before the construction of new premises in nearby Cumberland Street the Dunedin Central fire station was located here. From 1879 to 1911 services in the church directly next door were often interrupted by the clamour of each fire alarm. The Fire Station building was renamed Church House and was demolished in 1964 with the land eventually reverting to council use as a carpark.
