This is the main square of Alessandria where the town hall, government and province hall and former military command are located. It is also a parking place for several hundreds of cars, so it shows high air pollution.
Current configuration is due to Napoleon Bonaparte, that requiring a perfect rectangular shape to parade and train soldiers demolished the IX century Cathedral. Its ruins are located below the ground level in the southeastern part of the modern square, between the town hall and the government and provincial hall. In recent years a modern replica of Urbano Rattazzi statue, first socialist major of Alessandria, was reinstalled at the exact center of the square.
