This is the highest point on the island, with an altitude of 321 meters. The rock we see is also the largest phonolite on the island, consisting of intrusive alkaline rocks, which are product of magmatic activies from roughly nine milion years ago.
It has the shape of a plug because of the erosive process that have been working over several thousands of years and that affect the surfaces of the rock faults, leading to the fall of massive blocks.
There are many visual interpretations of Morro do Pico. Depending on the angle from which it is viewed for some it looks like a giant mermaid, for others a monkey or a indian chief, among others.
