  • Aug 29/07 If you are a cottager on the Shab as we are you'll provide comments throughout the year to help us all enjoy the lake. > fishing for Bass this yr has not been too productive..I assume it is weather related > landing for boat access cottagers can be congested at times.....but they are only day trippers taking up the space > boaters coming too close to the dock at excessive speed is causing shoreline erosion....if you have guests with boats or renting out your cottage it would help to remind them of safe boating habits etc... :)
  • Me again.... Water is low. Need to take out the dock soon Summer was great. Planning on visiting this weekend (Sept 15/16) Will send in update on lake levels etc....
  • Sept 18th/2007 Cold this past weekend. +11C during the day +2C at night. Nice clean sky tons of stairs. Water is still up
  • The "improvements" to the acces road have been an open invitation for some drivers to speed without regard for their own or other people's safety and it is just matter of time before we have a serious accident on this road. My feeling is that this problem is caused mainly by visitors with no regard for damage that they cause to the road and/or cottagers properties. It would be desirable to have some speed bumps specially as the road gets closer to the boat landing.
  • It is good to have a forum to express one's ideas and concerns about our Lake Congratulations of making this possible with the Shabomeka Lake Web Site.
  • Heading to the lake - January 3-5, 2008. Will report back on ice conditions and any other items worth noting.
  • Jan 3-5th - ice was about 6-8 inches Tons of snow on the cottage roof Caught 4 lake trout Today is Jan 13th - recent mild weather(+14C)and rain will probably have knocked the snow down.
  • In for the weekend Feb 8-10 0C. Windy Sunday, temperature dropped to -10C. Lots of snow. Drilled a few holes for ice fishing. Ice is about 16-18" however not good thick dense ice. Fish biting good. Caught 5 all released. Rich and Nancy stopped by on their skidoos. Should be back next weekend. 2008 has been the year with tons of snow particularly February......lots of snowfall records broken in southern Ontario already and the month is only half complete..Al
  • Tomcat, thanks for putting them back!
  • How's that road looking on Shab? Can you get to the beach with 4x4?
  • Tons of snow.....have been parking on the main road and walking in. There is also and huge amount of slush on the ice. I am heading up this weekend (March 14)
  • Ice fishing again last weekend (April 5th) Awesome weather +10. Sunburn! Caught and released 2 Lk Trout. 2.5 feet of snow in the bush. Ice was still OK.
  • appreciate the info. keep up the good work. somebody is having more luck with lake trout than me. have not landed one since may 04. i am sure i lost one lost weekend.
  • In the 1950's I vacationed with my family several summers at Marble Lake Lodge. Dad and I fished Shabomekaw a number of times, but it was not easy to get to then. There were no cottages on the lake and the bass fishing was excellent. The lake was called "Buck" by the folks in the area.
  • kenobycomcast.net - thanks for sharing your comments
  • tomcat....the original Marble Lake Lodge was owned and operated by the Perry family: Joe, Maggie and their son Arnold. Do you know if Arnold Perry is alive and living somewhere near Cloyne?
  • How come hardly anyone ever uses this website?
  • Good question on why limited use on this website..I think it needs to be easier access (find it easier on the web) I found it by accident a few years ago and was making entries regularly but no replies.....so I gave up. I put the link in the newsletter for our cottage assocation, still no interest. Sooooo, you asked. That's my short answer. Anyway, I am hiking in to my cottage this weekend (Jan9,10, 2010)to see if Hydro fixed the wires. Bad ice storm late December knocked down trees and lines..serious damage in some cases. Gotta go.
  • Hi Al Did they get the lines fixed and was there any other damage to cottages etc Do you know if there is a decent trail through the back currently for atvs and sleds? Talk to ya later, Don
  • Hey Don....I went in for a hike this past weekend..secondary line to my cottage is still not fixed. They are supposed to be going in tomorrow to fix. They have been at other cottages over the past couple of weeks.....sounds like they are still working on the lines. Trail looks good along the hydro line. Cottage lot 179? I think it is was nailed by a huge spruce right across the middle of their cottage. The owners are aware of it. I drilled a couple of holes for ice fishing and to check thickness of ice. Looks to be 6-8". Lots of snowmobile and ATV action on the lake based on the tracks. Al
  • Thanks Al. I was thinking of going overnight on Jan. 16 with some buddies but will check with hydro 1 to see about power.I'm trying to think of where 179 cottage is. Is it near the point where you turn right to get to the landing? Thats a shame. Hope there isn't too much structural damage. What number did you call for updates on the power situation? Thanks again, Don
  • I heard today that it may have been the cottage next to the one that burned this summer going towards the landing...yellow one.
  • Hey Don Are you talking about Bill Beattys old cottage or east of that? T.
  • ya ...I think it is bills old place ..if it is 179 like tomcat wondered
  • Hi guys....yes it's Bill Beattys old place. Looks like owners in process of trying to assess the damage. I have been in touch with an electrician to fix the stack at our cottage as well. Hydro can't do anything until stack is fixed and inspected. Hope to get it done by end of week so I can go in on weekends. We use regularly through the winter but it sucks with no hydro....mainly due to the lights..anyway. Hope all is well. Mild weather eh!?
  • hey Al I talked to Rich and he said the trees did little damage to the roof (179)..just have to remove them. Sorry to hear about your stack. Apparently he was without power for 3 days and used a generator and cooked on the wood stove. I'm hoping to go up this weekend (just finished the atv repairs). Supposed to be -3 and sunny Saturday.(jan 23rd). Maybe I'll see you up there sometime this winter. Don
  • How's it going Mr. Spot I enjoyed watching your band on YouTube!
  • Hey Don...might be heading in as well. If I see activity down at your end I will stop in and say hi. Cheers, Al
  • Hey Al, They are still saying -3 and sunny for Sat. in Northbrook. Calling for snow Sun. so it'll be a quick getaway Sun. Morning. Bye for now, Don
  • hey Al.. got everything loaded up this am and then had a major truck malfunction(jan 23) so didn't make it up...hope you had a good stay. Called Rich from the Shop..he said it was still bitter cold at 9:30 am. If things get fixed I may aim for Wed. I'm in envy..Trout for supper at the lake! Don
  • hello.....been on the lake for quite some time...recently purchased a water access lot, just wondering about footings, foundations and what can get down the back road....any information would be greatly appreciated Thanks
  • hi me again....my wife and myself would be interested in knowing the Shabomeka Lake website address. Thanks again
  • Hi Jeff I believe this is the site (forum)...2nd hit on google when you type in shabomeka lake. If there is another I wouldn't mind knowing myself.
  • didn't end up going. flu made it's way through the house. May try again this weekend. Still waiting for the electrician dude to fix the stack on the cottage so hydro can hook the power line up. Footings, foundations and back roads.....unfortuately nothing to comment on this one. Later all
  • Hey Al..Bummer about the Flu bug! I think Jeff may have some luck talking with Rich regarding foundations etc.
  • Hey Jeff, What lot did you purchase...I may be able to recommend an excellent cottage builder who lives on the lake.
  • hi...thanks for the input...the lot we purchased is 2300 (911#)....I would appreciate names of builders etc. Thanks again Jeff
  • Hi.....We are also wondering what equipment is able to get down the back road (water access).....Did it rain there today Thanks again
  • hey jeff I just wrote a big response then the forum brainfarted...so heres the short and sweet version... You know the builder...you spoke with him in front of your place and at the cottage show. I now know the lot..nice one..heard you were clearing it. I think only a hoe could get thru the back way. I hear you need permission from mississippi cons. auth. to bring heavy equip.thru the creek below the dam. And yes it rained big time up there today. The fella you talked to on the lake is busy apparently with a project this spring but you could always ask him about yours...very knowledgeable...I can't speak for him as far as availability though. Ask him. Bye for now,Don
  • jeff... as far as builders go..I am hesitant about giving my friends name etc on a forum .If you post your email I can give you details...no guarantees though on availability and what types of installations he is up for.
  • just talked to my friend and he would be happy to discuss your project..like I say, I would rather not post names and numbers on the forum but I could talk with you on email or phone..he said you are in Belleville...me too.
  • good tip on the name postings, have to remember that .......well, no word about my stack yet. Still waiting for the call back for the electrician. Hope it comes soon. I have a few days of vacation I was planning on using for a hike in soon. is there lots of water over top of the ice? Supposed to get nice and cold again..sweet!
  • Hey Mr. I was talking to R and he said there is no snow on the ice and I mentioned it was going to be -18 c friday so he thinks there will be even more ice this weekend. How did the family make out with the flu? Im aiming now for Sun Or Mon now...not too fussy about getting the cottage warmed up from -18. Take care..Don
  • PS tomcat I believe you have my email address from the newsletters so feel free to contact me that way...if the electrician stands you up, I was told you had another offer...
  • hi thanks for all the info....I might be up there this Saturday for the day. Let me know if you are around I will look for you. My e-mail is simmonje@gmail.com. I think we will start slow (small bunky)...maybe footings/foundation this summer and then build after that. My wifes family has a cottage on the lake which we can always use as backup. Thanks again
  • forgot to ask...with all the rain, how is the ice...safe for an atv??
  • going to email you now jeff not sure about ice after the rain...should be good by sat...bring an auger and test it
  • thanks Don, ya I do have your email address...I am going to call again to see what's up. Apparently he went in to check it out so not sure what's up. The thing is it needs to be repaired, inspected and the inspector call Hydro to give green light to hook up. So will keep you posted. Jeff, I am 2 cottages down from your lot so don't be shy if you need a hand with anything and I am up at the same time; feel free to ask. Looks like the weather is dipping down now so should help with ice conditions. al
  • hey Al Aiming for Sunday Morning for a lake trip...-25 C Saturday night now so it says for Northbrook on the 'net. -6 Sunday. Maybe see you on the way out.. I don't mind the cold..it's getting the cottage warmed up from scratch with a face cord of wood that I don't like doing when I have to bring it in by atv...you must have electric heat? Don
  • thanks again for all the input......might be up Sunday....depends on the thermometer jeff
  • I'll be there Sun around 10:30am thru the back way...gotta stoke the stove then out for a tour on atv. Going to stop by the lot for a look if thats ok. Don Ps...he's expecting your call...
  • Jeff...check your email
  • hey Don...received your voicemail at the house over the weekend. Lots of running around this weekend so no travel. Gonna try for this coming weekend. The woodstove we have in the cottage works great once the heat starts movin around inside...with no hydro its a pain in the butt cause it gets dark so early.
  • Hey Al, Had a commitment today but am heading up Monday morning if all goes well. I take it they haven't repaired your hydro stack yet. Some friends I visited Friday are sick so I hope I don't wake up sick in the am. Got the atv in the truck now..so hope not. Later, Don
  • hey al he did a great job on the stack etc I was up mon, tues, wed...cold at night ...nice during the day like your place..stepped inside to pull 2 wires for him. Bye for now...
  • this is great news......thanks for the update. The inspection is scheduled for this Thursday. Likely won't get power til next week sometime tho cause the Hydro guys still need to hook up. The cottage needs work inside, been picking away at it. any suggestions on what i could do for the ceiling? My thought is to insulate and cover but just not sure what the hell to do. I will be heading up this weekend for sure. Power or no power. The Monday is a stat holiday and I took Tuesday off as well. I have a small generator I can use for the lights etc..woodstove keeps the place cozy. Ice should be real good now eh. Later
  • Well, you could close in the bottom part and put insulation on top, or insulate between the roof trusses (they aren't really trusses) and cover it with some kind of wood and use that lower ceiling structure for storage. My friend on Oak Lake has the same set up as yours and he is going to insulate the roof part and cover it and leave it kind of a cathedral ceiling and store things on the lower cross members. He'll have to hang a fan from the peak to move the air up and down .Hope That helps you, I may be up again this Sat. to trim a birch that got bent from the ice and is now arching over my hydro stack. Don
  • well..talked to Rich on Ssturday. Looks like no sign of the inspector for the stack. They were scheduled to go in on the 11th...so now that will push the hydro hook up out longer. This is getting frustrating now. Rich was saying lots of people of ice fishing Friday and Saturday.
  • Hey Al, There were people on the ice sat, sun and mon. It was good weather. Lots of snow machines and atvs. I just got home, so I'm going for a nice hot shower. Talk to ya later, Don
  • What is our collective view on Personal Watercraft on Shabomeka?
  • well.....my personal view is if operated using common sense; like any other watercraft then no problem, however, the practices that I have witnessed are...users go too fast, lake too small, creates too many waves, no respect for the cottagers, generally abusers are visitors and not actual cottage property owners on the lake. I hate them. But I also hate fast boats, and snowmobiles.
  • I'm with Personal Opinion! In fact, I am busy this winter building a motion/sound activated mount for a 50 caliber machine gun which I plan to locate in the woods on my property. On my next day off I will be tuning the firing mechanism to respond to the sound of a personal watercraft engine. It may take some fiddling with, so be careful on the lake. I should have the bugs worked out by Labour Day weekend. I will post diagrams when it's finished so more of us can do the same.
  • I agree with Personal and Silent. No PWCs on Shabomeka! Can't we at least adopt a non-binding agreement at the next meeting? That way owners who rent might at least mention it to prospective renters. Why not post a sign at the Public Dock that says "PWCs NOT WELCOME HERE".
  • I agree that there are irresponsible people on the lake...but "silent but deadly" take a chill pill. You must be one if the neighbors that piss me off! I have gun shot wounds on my cottage and property. Don't fuck with my property or me. You're not right in the head dude. Where did all this correspondence come from...this site was used for pleasant conversations and helpful info.
  • wow...looks like that questions on PWC's got people fired up. change of gears a bit...Spring is just around the corner and can't wait til the days start getting a bit longer, the snow buds on the trees start showing, the smell of a new season in the air. Really looking forward to another year on the lake. Thanks Sid - nice goal!!
  • I'm doing my annual check-in to ask about the road on Shabomeka. Is it drivable? Can't wait for first spring visit. If anyone here is on the road often, I'd really appreciate knowing when it's dried up enough. I have 4-wheel drive, but I don't want to wreck the road with ruts for the rest of the summer.
  • hi...might be heading up this Saturday, just wondering what the lake is like. Thanks in advance for any info
  • hi....just wondering about how much ice is on the lake thanks
  • Hi Jeff, I was up a month ago and the ice was thick. My friend ( next door to your new lot towards the boat launch ) was up last weekend and I am waiting for a response from him regarding the ice conditions for you.. He went in through the back way and hiked along the trail so he may have no idea regarding the ice; but I will post something for you when he gets back to me. I'm chomping at the bit for open water myself...getting pretty close. Have a good one and good luck with the new lot. I looked at it from the top and it's a dandy. Don
  • hi guys...I was up last weekend. Ice good . quite a few people up. Jeff, if that was you at your lot I was just down from you towards Dons place ice fishing. Weather was awesome...sunburn as well. A couple of buddies and I are supposed to go in next weekend (20th) to do some ice fishing....if ice is safe. If not..beer and cards I guess. Hydro is hooked up finally.
  • Hey people, sounds like we might get cell phone service soon...anybody know?
  • heard same thing on the tower......I managed to get reception on my blackberry sitting while on the ice doing some ice fishing a couple of weekends ago.
  • Check out this link for wireless at our lake http://www.itworldcanada.com/news/omniglobe-expands-rural-ontario-wireless-internet/139640
  • ps...copy and paste the link I mentioned in address bar and hit enter. (not calling anyone computer illiterate.... lol)
  • thanks Don. I think I will include in the spring newsletter. I went to the lake this past weekend. Ice was still ok. But think it will be unsafe anytime now.
  • Hi....can anyone add to the cell phone possibility on the lake...I read the information from omniglobe...it talks about wireless internet...will it also include cell phone service? Thanks
  • I'm no technician, but from what I've gleaned if you can see the TVO repeater tower located on HWY 41 next to Mazinaw (the one with the red light at night), then you'll be able to receive a wireless signal and I believe that signal will carry both internet and cellular. By the way, Don Ross, what does lol mean?
  • Hey Wireless Willie... lol means "laugh out loud" ..computer talk for smiling or saying something humorous etc. I didn't know how to copy and paste an address til a few months ago...and thought I would include how to do it in case there was someone like me with limited computer skills. I'm an excellent "copy and paster" now...lol. Hey Jeff, I am unsure about the cell service with omniglobe. I talked to some one from bell on the bell website and she said that a wireless "stick" for the computer would work at the lake. I think she was wrong because I have no bell service on my cell past Northbrook. I would think the wireless and phone service would come from the same tower, like wireless willie mentioned. I'm going to do some more homework on this. Hey Al, You mentioned your blackberry worked up there...do you mind me asking who your service provider is? Maybe this will help narrow things down. Bye for now all, Don
  • My crackberry is on Telus....it wouldn't work right in th cottage but managed to get a connection out on the lake. Cheers to y'all for now. Count down is on for ice out and boat in..
  • Can anyone tell me if the ice is off the lake yet?
  • Ice on lake. Danger. Go soon.
  • Thanks Iceman. I am waiting for the ice to leave, not to go fishing.
  • Hi....any word on the ice...thanks
  • Hi.....Anyone know if the ice is out? Thanks
  • I am still waiting for same reply based on your ask. May head up this weekend.
  • Hi.....I assume the ice is out, I have a friend who has a cottage on a small lake in the Bancroft area....ice went out there last week.
  • good to know....thanks Jeff
  • Ice go. Iceman too.
  • Hey Iceman.. Could you tell me the water level on the lake? I am assuming you were up there this weekend. Thanks, Don
  • Iceman back from summer campsite. What Iceman miss?
  • Iceman making this campfire hot again.
  • Hi Iceman, just wondering what the lake/ice conditions are
  • Hey everyone, is anyone having trouble logging in to the new website? It seems that you have to be authorized? or whatever? Not much info there - shouldn't the minutes from the meetings be posted for those who couldn't make it out there? This site seems much easier to use as a chat page. Have a nice summer.
