Hilton Rarotonga Resort & Spa (abandoned)

Cook Islands / Rarotonga / Avarua /

The project nearly bankrupted the Cook Island government, who financed the venture during stalled construction in the 1990's as a Sheraton. The construction site was later known as the Vaimaanga Hotel. The project was picked up again in 2007 as the Hilton Rarotonga Resort & Spa, but was still never finished and sits abandoned.

The land is still up for lease, i don't think anyone will try to rebuild this as the land is Tapu. It an amazing place, it's incredible how close it to being complete. I went there at night to explore, pretty eerie. Definately reccommend to anyone to have a look around. Make sure you go inside and look at the almost finished accomodations!

I was there last week, and it is still abandoned. Ask permission to explore because it's not public land, and it's just rude to enter private property without asking first. A very cool place with a fascinating history, so definitely ask the locals about it.

Was there a couple of days ago - was unaware of the history, but thought it had a very eerie feeling to it. Has been interesting to Google it now home in NZ and discover what has happened. What a waste! Though in saying that, it looks a monstrosity and almost out of place in Raro.
