Gravesite of Alice Roosevelt Longworth (Washington, D.C.)

USA / Maryland / Takoma Park / Washington, D.C.

Daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt and wife of Rep. Nicholas Longworth.

Long-time Washington socialite and the orginal "Rebellious First Daughter"

Alice was the only child of Roosevelt's first wife, who died suddenly. As such, Alice and Roosevelt's second wife Edith had a distant relationship at best.

It is thought that TR took a hands-off approach to Alice's upbringing because she reminded him too much of his beloved first wife, and because he never forgave himself for not being there when she died.

Pres. Roosevelt was once asked by a reporter why he had such difficulty controlling his daughter. He replied, "I can run the county, or I can control Alice, but I cannot do both."

The shade of blue called "Alice Blue" is attributed to her.
