LeConte Hall, UGA. Named after Joseph LeConte, class of 1841. After graduation, LeConte taught science at Franklin College (as UGA was then known) during the 1850s. After the Civil War, LeConte helped to found the University of California-Berkeley. The building was originally used for biology and other sciences. It has housed the UGA history department for at least the last 30 years. When it was renovated in the early 1990s, special precautions had to be taken to dispose of excessive residual traces of formaldehyde and other chemicals dating from its days as the science department.
