green area, woodland
The Butts is a patchwork of fields and woodland spread over a hill on the edge of the Westlands housing estate in Newcastle-under-Lyme. It is popular with dog-walkers, nature lovers, joggers and, in winter, a very popular place to go sledging. The area is steep and can be boggy.
The name suggests that these hills were used as a shooting range, where the hillside was used as a barrier to prevent stray shot causing injury. The former presence of an army barracks a mile away in Newcastle-under-Lyme (on Barracks Road, ST5 1LG) would support this theory.
