Yorkship Village was built by the US government during World War I to house workers for the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, which was in walking distance on the Camden waterfront. Designed by Electus Litchfield, Yorkship Village (now the Fairview Village section of Camden) is considered a model of successful urban planning in the English "garden city" tradition.
