Gavre is a peninsular joined to the mainland by a five mile sand bar, which runs parallel to the coast and almost encloses the Petite Mer de Gavres behind it - a vast tidal salt lagoon, covered in cocklers at low tide.
Gavres is a small grey granite village - a bit self-consciously pretty. Tiny cottages arranged round alleyways have their doors right on the street. The granite is sometimes thickly plastered and whitewashed, leaving the boulder quoin stones. Gavres is a maze of little streets, with spectacular sea views out all round.
