João Pinheiro is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Minas Gerais.
The municipality was founded on August 30, 1911, and is located in the northwest portion of Minas Gerais. João Pinheiro is the largest municipality in territorial extension in the state, with 10,727.460 km², having almost double the area of the entire Federal District, four times the area of Luxembourg, and is larger than countries like Cyprus. It is slightly larger than the Patos Lagoon in Rio Grande do Sul. It has easy access via BR-040, which connects Brasília and Belo Horizonte. And it is connected by paved roads in good condition to the municipalities of: Paracatu, Lagoa Grande, Brasilândia de Minas, Buritizeiro, Presidente Olegário, São Pedro da Ponte Firme, and Varjão de Minas. The city has some traditional festivals, such as the Festa do Peão de Boiadeiro (Cowboy Festival), held in April, the out-of-season carnival, João Pirô, held in October, and the City Festival, held in September.
