The foundation was established in 1924 by Sebastian Kresge, founder of the Five-and-ten store which later became Kmart Corporation. In 1984, the foundation restored this 19th century farm for its headquarters.
In 2004, an expansion was announced and the "green" buildings opened in January 2006.
