Between 1610 and 1930 there was a prison on the site. The prison was closed between 1930 and 1939, but was re-opened as an English/American military establishment between 1939 and 1966.

Regime: Includes full/part-time education, workshops, training courses and a works department. Offending behaviour groups are available. There are also special features e.g. Welfare to Work, Job Club, improved regime, listener schemes, programme development and community projects.
