Historic monument listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

Erected: 1919
Architect: Bama Foundry Co.
Material: iron (base); cast lead (monument) *see note below*
Date added to NRHP: 4/26/1973
Notes: The boll weevil was responsible, in the early 20th century, for decimating the cotton crop of this area of Alabama. Up to that time, the region was virtually a single-crop producer, and the invasion of the boll weevil forced local farmers to diversify their crops and begin growing, among other things, peanuts. This monument was erected by the citizens of Enterprise in recognition of the economic progress the area experienced as a result of this forced crop diversification.
The present monument is a polymer-resin replica of the original, which is on display, damaged, at a nearby museum. It was the victim of vandals and was deemed too expensive to continue to repair.
