Corte

France / Corse / Corte /

Corte (Corsican Corti) is a commune in the Haute-Corse department of France on the island of Corsica. It is the fourth-largest commune in Corsica (after Ajaccio, Bastia, and Porto-Vecchio).
The heart of Corsican identity. The home of the shortlived government of independent Corsica, between Genoan (sp?) and French rule.
The citadel rises high above the town in Corte, home to the interesting Musee de la Corse. Ville Haute, Corte's upper town, has charming narrow alleyways and ancient buildings covering the eastern slope of the mountain. Corte also boasts the only university on the island, which gives the village a very special ambience. During the struggle for Corsican independence, coastal Corte was the site of many a dramatic event because the island's interior was considered a stronghold of fierce Corsican nationalists. Pasquale Paoli, the "General of the Nation", made Corte the capital of the island from 1755 to 1769. Corte is also the main starting point for excursions into the surrounding mountains. At least one day should be set aside for a visit to the magnificent Restonica Valley, which extends to the south-west town.

Being in Corsica, the birthplace of Napoleon gave us a keen sense of history. A recent visit to St Helena island where he died in exile made this trip more meaningful.
